Water Tower Place
Water Tower Place was built in 1975 by Urban Retail Properties. The tower is 74 stories tall, the eighth tallest building in Chicago, and the twenty-sixth tallest building in the United States.
The opening of Water Tower Place substantially shifted the economic focus of the Magnificent Mile area of Chicago. Water Tower Place brought middle class businesses into an area which had previously been exclusively made up of luxury hotels, retailers, and apartments. As a result, Chicago's retail center shifted from State Street to Michigan Avenue.
Today, the shopping mall within Water Tower Place is one of Chicago's busiest shopping centers. The mall features eight levels and over 100 shops, as well as a live theatre, several restaurants, and a chrome and glass atrium.
