Gold Coast
The Gold Coast neighborhood is bordered by Lake Michigan and extends west to LaSalle and south to Oak. Gold Coast is one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the Chicago area and is largely made up of high-rise apartments facing Lake Michigan.
The most outstanding feature of Gold Coast is the Palmer Mansion, a grand castle on Lake Shore Drive. The Palmer Mansion was built in 1885 by merchant and hotel owner Potter Palmer.
In 1978 the Gold Coast Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
